چکیده

During the development of the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS), launched in 2003, it was understood that the values of surface pusle reflectance was an important design parameter for satellite laser altimeters and that the magnitude of observed pulse reflectance would have valuable applications. Thus a significant effort was made to obtain calibrated surface pulse reflectance from GLAS measurements. In this paper we describe the calibration and atmospheric correction procedures and present global measurement results for earth surface laser pulse reflectance.

Laser pulse reflectance of the ocean surface from the GLAS satellite lidar

[1] The world’s oceans can potentially be used as an extended target for achieving a radiometric calibration of space borne lidar if the reflective properties of the surface can be accurately predicted from available environmental data such as wind speed. To test current understanding of ocean reflectance we compare surface pulse returns measured with the 1064 nm altimetry channel of the Geosci...

Evaluation of Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (glas) Waveforms for Vegetated Landscapes Using Airborne Laser Altimeter Scanning Data

The Geoscience Laser Altimeter System aboard NASA’s Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite will record the height distribution of laser energy reflected from surfaces within 70 m diameter footprints. For land surfaces, post-processing of this waveform data will be used to estimate the within-footprint mean elevation and surface relief due to ground slope and roughness, vegetation cover, buildi...

Cloud and aerosol measurements from GLAS: Overview and initial results

[1] Global space borne lidar profiling of atmospheric clouds and aerosol began in 2003 following the launch of the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) on the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite. GLAS obtains nadir profiles through the atmosphere in two wavelength channels, day and night, at a fundamental resolution of 76.8 m vertical and 172 m along track. The 532 nm channel uses photo...

A Fiber-Optic-Based 1550-nm Laser Radar Altimeter with RF Pulse Compression

-We are developing a laser radar (lidar) altimeter that uses commercial off-the-shelf fiber-optic components and traditional RF and digital signal processing techniques to achieve fine-range accuracy despite a low transmit peak power. A 1550-nm operating wavelength was selected so that available erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) could be used to provide optical gain. The transmitted signal,...

Lidar Measurement of Snow Depth: Accuracy and Error Sources

Airborne laser altimetry (lidar) is a remote sensing technology that holds tremendous promise for mapping snow depth in snow hydrology and avalanche applications. In recent years lidar has seen a dramatic widening of applications in the natural sciences, resulting in technological improvements and an increase in the availability of sensors. Modern sensors allow recording of multiple pulse retur...
